Green Logistics Optimization

PIONEERS: Green Logistics Software

PIONEERS is an international consortium which will implement and showcase innovative solutions that reduce GHG emissions in ports and hinterland logistics operations while ensuring they remain competitive and efficient.

In PIONEERS MJC² will apply its multimodal logistics planning software, optimizing freight movements to make best use of new transport technology such as electric propulsion and autonomous systems.

PIONEERS - Greening Ports and Logistics Operations

Multimodal Logistics Planning

PIONEERS will develop and use new green logistics and transport solutions such as autonomous e-barges, e-trucks and hydrogen vehicles.

At the same time MJC² will develop advanced multimodal logistics planning algorithms which can optimize existing barge and truck operations around major ports, while enabling the rapid integration of new technologies such as e-barges as they become available commercially.

In the short-term this will promote modal shift and ensure efficient cost-effective use of vessels and vehicles, reducing GHG emissions and congestion around major ports.

Longer-term, it will allow logistics operators to manage effectively hybrid fleets, using vessels and vehicles with different propulsion methods and energy sources efficiently and flexibly.

Port of Antwerp-Bruges

In PIONEERS MJC²'s solutions will be applied to the highly complex container logistics operations around the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, which is the second largest port in Europe, and has an extensive network of hinterland connections.

In particular the Port has excellent connections to the European barge network, enabling short transit times to many locations in the European hinterland. The focus in PIONEERS is how to make best use of this network, and of the capacity of the barges operating along these waterways, reducing congestion and encouraging modal shift.

MJC²'s work in PIONEERS will support Port of Antwerp-Bruges' commitment to becoming carbon neutral by 2050, while the flexibility of the solutions developed will allow other ports around Europe and indeed around the World to adopt similar solutions.

This project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.
